Developing Courageous Leaders: How RISE Is Shaping Salem鈥檚 Future
鈥淎t Salem, I have the opportunity to shape strategy while also investing directly in the future leaders of tomorrow. That intersection of institutional leadership and student impact is deeply energizing to me. I am able to contribute to long-term institutional sustainability while also seeing, every day, the growth and confidence of emerging women leaders in health and beyond.鈥
Designed and led by Vice President of Mission and Strategy and Chief of Staff, JaNae Joyner, PhD, MHA, Salem鈥檚 RISE Leadership program was created to develop Salem Academy and College students into confident, courageous leaders who will help create a healthier, more equitable world throughout their lives. The thoughtfully designed RISE Leadership events held each semester provide participants with invaluable opportunities to reflect on their strengths and, through hands-on learning, they build communication and leadership skills while connecting with regional and national health leaders.
At the most recent RISE Leadership event, students engaged in a life-size version of the Game of Life. During the three-hour experience, participants moved through stations set up throughout the room, each representing a different point on the gameboard. At every station, students explored topics related to courage, the event鈥檚 theme, and engaged in meaningful conversations about real-world situations, reflecting on how they would respond.
JaNae joined Salem Academy and College in May of 2023 after 15 years at Wake Forest School of Medicine, where she built and led high-performing teams. 鈥淭he teams I led were thriving, our operations were strong, and the Center for Experiential and Applied Learning (CEAL) that I founded was well established. It was the right moment to ask what was next,鈥 JaNae said of her decision to transition her career to Salem. 鈥淚 was especially drawn to Salem鈥檚 focus on health leadership. With a background in molecular medicine and science, combined with executive leadership programming experience and formal administrative leadership, the role offered a meaningful bridge between my academic health experience and my passion for developing leaders.鈥
A key partner in the RISE Leadership program is Victoria Kline King, MD, 黑料导航鈥檚 Health Leader in Residence. Of Victoria鈥檚 contributions, JaNae said, 鈥淪he provides feedback as we design the program and serves as a co-facilitator on the day of events. She has a background as both a family medicine physician and as a physician executive who has built and led a physician leadership executive program inside a major health system.鈥
Through the RISE Leadership program, JaNae is helping shape a culture at Salem where students recognize and develop their potential and the skills to lead with passion and purpose. By bridging strategy, mentorship, and innovation, she is strengthening Salem鈥檚 mission and ensuring graduates leave not only prepared for successful careers but also equipped to make a meaningful difference in their communities’ health and well-being.
